Intensive Outpatient Program

The Cambridge Eating Disorder Center (CEDC) evening program is a five evening a week Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The schedule of our IOPs allow our clients to continue with employment or school/college attendance. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) has two separate tracks: 1) Adult evening program; and 2) Adolescent evening program.

Adult Intensive Outpatient Program

Our adult IOP program is for individuals 18 years and older. The schedule of the program is from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Each evening consists of a goal setting group, a supervised meal (patients bring their own meal which must meet certain nutritional requirements) and two therapy groups. The various groups include but are not limited to: Nutrition, Therapeutic Restaurant group, Yoga, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Body-image, Bibliotherapy, Psychotherapy, Relationship issues, and Leisure/recreation therapy group.

Psychoeducation, skill development, and building and promoting a healthy self-concept are the key components of our evening program.

To participate in the IOP, clients must be medically stable and have an outpatient treatment team. In cases where there is no outpatient team, we will help to create one either through our outpatient department or referral to other treaters in the community.

The program is provided in a nurturing, supportive environment in a state-of-the-art facility in the accessible heart of Cambridge. Out location is easily accessible by bus or Subway.

To start the process of getting involved in the IOP program, please call (617) 547-2255 ext. 222 or toll free (888) 900-CEDC (2332) to set-up an initial evaluation appointment.

Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program

In response to increased inquiries about treatment for adolescents, we have created a separate track within our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Our Adolescent program is designed to address the needs of young people ages 12-17 who struggle with eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other types of eating disorders. The IOP model is ideal for this age group, as they are able to receive a higher level of care than weekly outpatient appointments allow, without having to leave school for inpatient, residential, or partial hospital treatment. Our program is unique in that we are able to work intensely with clients several nights per week while they are functioning in their everyday lives. This enables us to teach them skills which will help them navigate the difficulties and stress in their lives without resorting to their eating disorder as a way of coping.

The program is designed for adolescents ages 12-17 who need a higher level of care than weekly outpatient appointments can provide. It is also a helpful transition program for clients who are discharging from inpatient, residential, or partial hospital treatment.

Our program is available five nights a week, Monday through Friday, from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Each evening consists of a check in group, a supervised meal (patients bring their own meal which must meet certain nutritional requirements) and two therapy groups. The Adolescent Program is focused on helping strengthen self-esteem, addressing attitudes towards food, weight, and appearance, and improving interpersonal effectiveness. In a nurturing and supportive environment we create the opportunity for our patients to learn new coping skills and explore underlying issues which reinforce their disordered eating behaviors. Some of the groups are: nutrition, self-esteem, body confidence, family issues, peer relationships, cognitive-behavior therapy, etc.

We are providers with several insurance companies and are able to attain coverage with most insurance carriers. CEDC is conveniently located in Harvard Square in Cambridge. To set up an initial evaluation appointment, please call (617) 547-2255 ext. 222 or toll free (888) 900-CEDC (2332).
